Carter’s Service Learning Project
My service-learning project involves me helping with environmental issues with the Waccamaw Wildlife Refuge. “This refuge takes care of and provides protection for over 280 threatened and endangered species”. This is why the refuge needs my help; they are looking for all the help they can get in taking care of the endangered species. Currently the refuge contains 23,000 acres and having only a few people cannot manage this” (Refuge, 2012). This plan is needed so we can decrease the number of endangered species we have in our area.
The purpose of my project is to lend a helping hand to a group that desperately needs it. This plan will help by making sure that there are enough people out in the wildlife protecting and saving nature. We will have opportunities to educate others about the wildlife and the endangered species. I have worked with this group before. I helped them by aiding in building a nature trail and collecting different species of spiders and other insects.

For the project, I will be working with Ms. Carter’s service learning group. Every spring and fall, she has a service-learning group that aids a newly graduated student from Coastal in a project that they are doing. I will be working with Kenneth Faulk and Ethan Hunt. The C3 group will also be there along with the student from Coastal and Mrs. Carter. We will be at the refuge headquarters, which is 20 miles north of Georgetown and 15 miles south of Conway off highway 701. My group will be working on the ecosystems and endangered species. “The good news is that some species have made a comeback. The bad news is that many more species are now under threat, including indicator species and evolutionarily unique species. (When an indicator species becomes threatened, endangered, or worse, extinct, this means an entire ecosystem faces collapse.)”( (Sara, 2012)
Many possible outcomes may happen because of my services. “Improving nature trails, landscaping, and managing habitats and to protect and manage diverse habitat components within an important coastal river ecosystem for the benefit of threatened and endangered species.”  (Refuge, 2012). The result of my work will result in a more environmentally safe Horry and Georgetown county.  C3 effort on the service-learning project will also decrease the number of endangered species, or could possibly find a new species of wildlife such as a plant or animal.
I will check my outcomes by taking pictures that are allowed to be taken, and will take pictures of the refuge before we start work to show how the environment looked before the C3 service learning project. Then, at the end of my fifteen hours, I will take more pictures and compare them. If I do my job, right then you should see the growth in the environment and the benefits from the growth. I can also show charts of the endangered species and the growth in the numbers of their species.
The resources that I will need are the basics for outdoor work such as shovels, rakes, and a wheelbarrow. I have my own transportation, and I will provide transportation for my fellow group members. I could also get extra help from my friends and my brother in-law. I will make sure my mom knows where I am and make sure that Mrs. Carter will be able to show up to the refuge. I am excited and am looking forward to my service-learning project.
